An external light will have all kinds of reflections. The wire is prone to chafe on the steering cables and where it goes into the compass. It is pretty much a trace it back to the start from the compass end and see what the problem is operation. Dumb question - did you measure the voltage or is there a chance the bulb died? I've tried every breaker and switch. No luck. I can either trace the wiring back to the breaker or put a red LED in the navpod above the compass.
