before you invest in a transformer, look at 12 V powers adapters for laptops. 
Something like this (as an example):

Also, for the brave who want to try it, there is a Linux USB-key-based “PC on a 
stick” that retails for $25-$75 (https://www.xtra-pc.com/).

Finally made a decision! I got a Dell micro PC on sale for $129.​  The power 
supply is 45w at 19 volts, so I'll need a small transformer.  I ordered a 19 
inch Samsung TV for use as a monitor.  It runs on 14 volts.  With keyboard and 
mouse, I'm out about $300.  Add a 128 GB SD card and I should be in business.
