Hi All,
I am kind of into the BaoFeng radios… they have a whole slew of different ones… VHF, UHF, different FM, all kinds… I think they have a big sausage maker style factory and just put every kind of modulator in a handheld that they can. I do know I like the UHF ones and use them around the farm and on the boat… their VHF are not as good as my Midland or Kenwood, but the UHF ones are good for boat-to-dinghy-to-shore without much hassle and good batter life. The VOX function works good, they are stable… and the saltwater only bothers the batteries a little. Very true. In north america one couldn't buy the parts for 11 bucks, let alone add the labor $$ and some profit. I don’t know how they can possibly make these things, ship them halfway around the world, with chargers, headsets, etc, for 11 bucks each! This just defies reality. But, there it is. I rarely involve The Admiral in anchoring, but when I do I just use hand signals. Radios seem overkill for this. By the way, the endless variety of Baofeng (sp?) radios available for cheap are not legal for this use. Not that this stops anyone, but they aren’t. They are legally usable as ham radios only if you have a ham license. They come with a weird random set of frequencies from China that are kind of scattered around and not remotely legal in the USA or Canada. If you buy these things, at least program them for FRS/GMRS/MURS frequencies. The radios are not type accepted for that, but at least they’ll be on legal frequencies 😉 Joe Della Barba Thanks to all of the subscribers that contributed to the list to help with the costs involved.
