No new bird reports, but updates on DFO field trips

This is the Colorado Rare Bird Alert for Monday, July 5, 2010 at 5 am 
sponsored by Denver Field Ornithologists and the Rocky Mountain Bird 
Observatory.

Boulder County:
--A Slate-colored Fox Sparrow was reported by Nunes in a willow thicket north 
of Ward on CR 103 on June 19.  On June 22, Waltman reported multiple Fox 
Sparrows near the intersection of Hwy 72 and CR 103.
--A singing PHILADELPHIA VIREO was reported by Sparn in trees in her yard in 
Boulder on July 1.  Her address is 1095 Piedmont Ave.  Please respect private 
property and be friendly to her neighbors.  Watch for children and animals in 
the street.
 
El Paso County:
--A singing male Indigo Bunting was reported by Kathy Miller on the Santa Fe 
Trail north of the Woodmen Road access area on July 2.
  
Garfield County:
--Purple Martins were reported by McConnell on the Flatops BBS route along 
Buford Road on June 27.
--An America Three-toed Woodpecker was reported by McConnell on Buford Road 
north of Triangle Park turn on June 27.
 
Jackson County:
--A breeding plumaged Red-necked Grebe was reported by Steinkamp at Lake John 
on June 28.
 
Larimer County:
--An EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE, first reported by Leatherman at Grandview Cemetery on 
May 22 was reported again on June 23 by Leatherman moving around the cemetery 
but mostly in the SE corner and only singing sporadically.  On June 25, 
Leatherman heard the Pewee in several times in the southern half of the 
cemetery.
--The female White-winged Crossbill was reported by Leatherman at the top of a 
spruce in the east part of Section G on June 26.
--4 American Three-toed Woodpeckers were reported by Hall starting about 6 
miles up to Deadman Road from Red Feathers Lakes on July 1.
 
Las Animas County:
--A singing Gray Vireo was reported by Leatherman on SR 109 at mile post 18 
north of Rd 197.6 on the east side of SR 109 on June 16.
--On June 22, Duane Nelson reported several Gray Vireos on CR 197.6 --Long 
Canyon.  

Lincoln County:
--A juv SCISSOR-TAILED FLYCATCHER was reported by Kibbe near the intersection 
of CR 43 and CR U on June 27. 
 
Logan County:
--Northern Cardinals, Red-bellied Woodpecker, and Carolina Wren were reported 
by Leukering at Tamarack Ranch SWA on CR 385 east on June 19.
 
Montezuma County:
--LUCY'S WARBLERS and Summer Tanager were reported by Beason at Yellow Jacket 
Canyon on June 26.  Beason also heard additional
LUCY'S WARBLERS downstream about one mile from Ismay Trading Post on June 26.
 
Pitkin County:
--Purple Martins were reported by McConnell in Four-Mile Park above Ski 
Sunlight on June 26

Prowers County:
--A LEAST BITTERN was reported by Leatherman on the east side of Thurston 
Reservoir on June 21.
 
The DFO Field Trip for Saturday, July 10 will be to the Lyons Area led by 
Raymond Davis (303-823-5332).  Meet at 0830 at Lyon's Park 'n Ride, 1/2 block 
south of Main Street's traffic light.  Bring lunch for dining on Davis's porch.
 
The DFO Field Trip for Sunday, July 11 will be to Brainard Lake and South St. 
Vrain area led by Joanna Chan and Chishun Kwong (720-304-2073).  Meet at 0630 
at the Park 'n Ride at the Superior/Louisville exit of Boulder Turnpike 
(McCaslin Blvd) on the north side near the Colonial Theater.  Carpooling 
important -- limi 3 cars and 14 people plus leaders and their car.  Trip will 
include a moderate high-altitude hike at the lake, then hummingbird banding at 
Debbie and Steve Bouricius's home.  Bring lunch and water ( and maybe some 
sugar or sunflower seeds for the birds).  Plan on the trip ending about 3.  
Call the leaders to register by Wednesday, July 7.  
If too many wish to participate, will draw names and call everyone.
