I was about to mention the case of the Rosetta Stone which helped
Champollion (or Young) to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphs :)

Coming back to coccinelle, the issue I see is that currently, only
people at Diku/LIP6 have access to that knowledge. I would not be
surprised if within 5 years, the project is either dead, because
original authors have been moving on new stuff, forked, because the
cathedral model is too rigid, or both.
