So, it doesn't suck _that_ much? ;) I need a Linux enviroment mainly for checking out, how do the web pages show up in a real Linux situation. (... and I wouldn't mind learning a bit UNIX stuff and/or PHP at the same time...) Is redhat the most common distro nowadays? And, btw, are there any web-related differences between KDE and Gnome? Then again, I can install both of them (I guess). Installing easiness is not _that_ important. The popularity of the distribution is the most important thing. >i tried mandrake some time ago, and it seemed to be aimed quite directly >to desktop audiences - there was a lot of development stuff missing >which was needed to build custom server software and compiling almost >anything was quite difficult. Well, I don't need any coder tools... >debian is nice too, but it's not very newbie-friendly. with all kernel >configuration and so in early phase of install. Ouch! Then again, I _did_ manage to install Linux PPC on a G4 Mac... two years ago, when it still required a _lot_ of RTFMing... But, but, but... I'd rather take the one that is rather painless to install than the one which needs expert knowledge from the very beginning... ;) >all of them seem to be quite different from each others - configuration >files are in different places, software is installed in different places >by default.. bit like different OS. Yeah.... the term "operating system" has a bit different meaning today in everyday talk than it used to be. Nowadays an OS is supposed to handle everything from file management to entertainment (not to mention integrated internet surfing). Only a couple of years ago it was just there to launch the programs and handle the files on your hard disk. Anything else was third party stuff. ---> jab | commie | http://commie.oy.com "Less is moo" -- The Holy Mad Cow
