yeah well - as i said it depends what you count as application.. there's
zillion of gnome & kde -apps out there doing almost everything you can
imagine :)

there are plenty of good email-clients out there. many people are
getting on to "evolution" and "sylpheed" - and i'd say a lot of people
use netscape or mozilla -mail apps (or whatever they are called). pine
isn't bad.
as i see it both major desktop management/environment etc apps, gnome
and kde are both aiming towards looking like windows - which isn't
basically bad, but just makes me feel that have they really thought if
its actually good. of course it's easier to learn for people who've been
using windows - but is it really usable.
and a lot of people don't know they can have focus-follows-mouse instead
of annoying point-and-click -window-activation (and i'm pretty sure
focus-follows-mouse is easier on ones' wrists).
