I did it this way to avoid changing too much code in this PR. Changing the
signature of `makeProcessors` would require changes to all the subclasses,
which are many. In a future patch I think it would make sense to remove this
entire `StandardStageProcessor` class and rewrite the subclasses to directly
implement `execute`. I left a note about this in the class-level javadoc:
