My first instinct was to swap out the kafka test utils for [embedded
kafka|https://github.com/manub/scalatest-embedded-kafka] however this library
only contains a scala interface, and it does not play well with Java. There are
a few java wrappers around for this library, but I have yet to find one that
works for this purpose.
