Review Comment:
   Documented in both, with a "Storage format" section in the README covering 
the tradeoff and a commented entry in `config.toml`.
   
   One caveat on the zero-copy claim, since the docs name a crate that is not 
in the tree yet. The pairing is with `otlp_sink`, tracked in #3529, which the 
stale bot closed on 2026-07-17 and which I am picking back up. Proto mode is 
useful on its own, it is the storage saving that does not depend on the sink, 
but the end-to-end zero-copy path only closes once #3529 lands. Happy to reword 
the README to describe the sink generically instead of naming the crate if you 
would rather not reference an unmerged PR.
