I only noticed the GenericRecord use, sorry. GenericData.toString is safe,
though it doesn't specify what the structure of the JSON is. if you're getting
the result you suggest, it's the lossy one. So long as we point that out in the
docs (and give a pointer to the conversion processor for folks who need
non-lossy), I think that's fine.
and yes, the Avro JSON encoding would be substantially more complex. I think
the encoder in AVRO-1582 would be what you'd want.
