Thanks, @201811510411lw — reproducing the same fault-injection timing race on the parent `1650a04cd` answers the remaining checkpoint question, and splitting the test fix into its own PR with the 3/3 Java 8 and 3/3 Java 11 targeted runs is the right approach.
