thanks for the new .dll like the last one it works fine for the first few times 
and then I get a strange message from windows server 2008 saying the python.exe 
has stopped working. from searching the net I see other people have had similar 
problems with vista and windows server so I ran the code using the new .dll on 
a copy of windows xp and everything worked well. I have no idea what the 
problem could have been but am happy the it does not seem to effect xp
