Thanks everyone for the help. I ended up removing the System file from the
System Folder and then renaming the System Folder to something innocuous.
The wierd thing was (to me at least) that after this treatment was applied,
instead of giving me the blinking ?, the SE/30 would momentarily display the
Happy Mac, pause, show it again, pause etc. ad infinitum. No matter how I
mangled the System Folder, I was unable to supress this behaviour.

At any rate, the reason I was doing this was because I run Debian Linux on
this machine and that stopped working once I turned AppleTalk off. I wanted
to try various Systems of the SE/30 to see if that cleared the problem. As
it turns out, I appear to have just wasted some hours of my time over
several days sitting through the '30's interminably slow Linux boot-ups and
shutdowns only to learn that the root cause of the problem seems to be a
conflict with one of two Control Panels I have on the system - After Dark or
MountCache.

Computers - gotta love 'em.

Adam.
