Yo compacters everywhere,

To this dated thread, the -p said about the reliability of old hard drives:

I concur. Nowadays, I automatically replace a working Miniscribe with a third-height
newer drive. The failure rate of half-height Quantum 20 and 40 MB drives now has me
replacing those although they are much better than the Miniscribes. While I have many
working Miniscribes, on average, one in two has failed and they are the most likely to
give me grief while loading from scratch. The third-height Quantums of any size are
quite reliable. Because I have a growing collection of 80 MB drives, I no longer
install 40 MB drives in an SE or Classic at all.

You want to talk unreliable, the 40 through 160 MB big five-n-a-half drives from early
Mac II(series) and externals drives die at the rate of three in four and my early
formatting utilities often have grief with the rest. Dumpster stuff, every one of 'em.

If any lister desires a 20 or 40 MB drive to play with, I'll send you one or more for
the postage.

Bye the waye, I have two Rodime 20 MB drives that still work just fine with their
weird noises an all. No, you can't have these.
