Beats me.  But it does.  At least that's what the developer note said,
IIRC.  It definitely controls brightness.

Because apparently the 400K drive needs some sort of PWM signal itself to
control spindle speed, and the mobo doesn't provide that because the line
was used for brightness/contrast control instead.
