I know this thread is long since done, but I wanted to cast this out.

I bought an SE and had this same problem as, I think Vern posted this?  I
also received much of the same advice.  I finally discovered that someone
had renamed the folder containting the system something other than "System
Folder".  I changed it back and all the problems magically disappeared.
