Go back to square one.

Did you use a formatter that lets you set the interleave to 3:1 ?

That Plus may not be able to keep up with the default 1:1 interleave that most
Disk Initializers use.

Other than that, try fooling with the terminating cap on the external drive's
second connector. What happens when it's present.....what happens when it's
not....

How different do things get when the SCSI cable is in the upper plug versus the
lower plug.....
