good in theory, but a couple of problems in practice. first, you need a high voltage resistor, a normal 1//4 or 1/2 watt resistor from radio shack will just arc over and you haven't accomplished much, and if the resistor fails internally, you'll have reduced the voltage to just below where the resistor arcs. the other, more important problem, the wire from the screwdriver to the resistor and the resistor have to have high voltage insulation, or be far away from the metal and electronics and you or they can arc to those items. the component that can be damaged by quick discharge is the inside and outside coating on the crt. if you can find a suitable resistor and wire, it's a great idea, but i'd still follow it with a simple screwdriver to wire to ground discharge just to be sure, because resistors can and do fail, jumper leads are easy to test and seldom fail without pulling apart.
