I have used sheet paper in my Imagewriter II, but it is a bit of a pain. 
You just have to be a bit careful to get the paper to feed straight.

I think the Stylewriter uses a Canon ink tank. Can't recall the number 
off hand, but it is bound to be cheaper at an office supply store.
