Good idea! I remember the noisy fan being one of my only issues with these great little boxes. Heat however is a big issue with that cabinet design, and it just can't be done without venting. Here's what I did with mine: 1: I had a few power amp heat sinks lying around, so I pasted a little silicon grease (just a tiny tab) onto the cpu chip, and stuck a 3X4 inch heatsink on it. I remember being surprised there wasn't one already, but I also recall that clearance around the CRT tube was tight. 2: I mounted 2 matching muffin fans in dense foam rubber to isolate their sound, replacing the drum fan installed on my machine. When I did this, I carved out the original rear vent, and just put black windowscreen mesh over the two muffin fans. The fans were about 2.5", very quiet to start with, required 12VDC but I fed them 9VDC from a wallwart transformer, and I built a frame from light aluminum channel to mount them in, side by side (although thye are mounted in a stacked configuration). The foam rubber was the dense grey adheshive foam for weatherstripping, and it worked well. The whole thing here is to use springs or rubber or foam to isolate your fans from the cabinet, which acts as a sounding board. Springs work the best, but are awkward to mount. a large washer and thrubolt could do it... Anyway, my small mods made my mac almost silent. Only thing was I later had to install a condom around my floppy drive because it was serving as a dust collection bag. Good on you for making something elegant even better! m -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
