I've never noticed the fans in my Classics to turn off, never actually checked 
either.

Its the middle of summer here, most of the east coast of this prison colony 
will average 90+ in the old scale while reaching 40+C every now and then, I 
wouldn't "just do it".
A newer fan maybe the safest all round answer.
Should any thought be given to the collector the fan sits atop of as 
contributing to the noise?
