Discharging the CRT is a load of crap. I've been inside all sorts of Macs from Pluses to Colour Classics, have never, ever bothered, and nothing has ever happened. As Gamba said, this is just one of those CYA clauses. Anyway, to add RAM you only have to remove the logic board. Doing so is a snap, and I assume you already know how since you installed an Ethernet card. I bumped up my own SE/30 to 32Mb RAM about a year ago to run Linux and the whole operation went smoothly.
