Hi to all you (hopefully :-) ) other Compact Mac users on the list! My name is Matt, though I much rather prefer Falcon online. I just so happened to get a Macintosh Classic and a Macintosh Plus at a yard sale a few months ago... the Plus was dead (wouldn't even come on, sounded like it was going to blow up), so I gutted it and am trying to make a MacQuarium out of it :-) ... anyone need a Plus board? The Classic, on the other hand, is, in all its 8MHz glory (my Palm III runs faster than this thing *haha*), is sitting right next to me, currently booted in Sys 7.5NAD off a disk I downloaded on my PC (I'm very inter-platform, I managed to create a very loving relationship between my PC and my Mac file worlds...). But... now the problem is, it doesn't show my (230MB) hard drive on the desktop, which runs Sys 6.0.8 regularly. That's not my big issue right now, though. I'll get to those in a few days. Right now I'd like to introduce my computer lineup:
1) AMD Duron 950 PC, Win XP Pro, 256 RAM, 8GB HDD (not a typo, read on), 64MB video, my main computer. 2) My Web/FTP/Mail/Terminal/Mac file server... Windows 2000 Advanced Server, 80GB hard drive (my desktop loads 90% of its MP3s, programs, movies, etc. over my 100Mbps network), 128 MB RAM... 266MHz Pentium I CPU. 3) My Power Mac 6100/66 sitting right next to the server, next to my desktop. 128 MB RAM (yep, 128, Apple doesn't even support this much. Then again Apple would die if they saw how I have this thing set up), 66 MHz PPC 601 (?) CPU, 2GB HDD (SCA w/adapter), 4x0x24x SCSI CD burner, 256k L2 cache, Mac OS 9.1, iTunes, MS IE 5.1 (or whatever the latest is, it's not on right now...), mapped 2 drives to the server: MP3s and Programs, over 10Mbps built-in Ethernet. 4) My Mac Classic. 8MHz PPC 68000 (with Sim020 on it, acts like 68020), 4MB RAM (at yard sale, came with card but not inserted properly, only registered 1 MB, then I added a few chips from a PC out of my garage, 4MB!)... 230 MB HDD (came with 40, way too small... haha... I only use 4MB on this thing right now!)... exchanged 1.44 MB SuperDrive with one I pulled out of one of my dead LCs (dead = no HDD/RAM, FDD, boards work). I love Command-Option-X-O... ROM boot! haha I like PCs and Macs alike. The only reason I'm using a PC as my main computer simply because modern Macs are too dang expensive! I got my 6100 off eBay for like $40 and my Classic off a yard sale (for fixing one of his other Macs). PCs can be built gradually... as I get money, I upgrade my computer. I still like Macs, but the fact that only one company makes them kinda takes away from the glory. Or gives to it, it depends on your point of view. I like my Classic. I just want it to do something productive - and I'm dang good at making things do what they're not originally designed to do - like running iTunes and ripping MP3s on my 66MHz 6100. The ReadMe for iTunes says it requires a slot-loading iMac at least... HAHAHAHA :-) Hope we have fun in this group :-) Falcon -- Compact Macs is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/>.
