You compacters everywhere:

Our Ted Hodges <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> asks about putting his Classic II
online. Ted describes his Mac thus:

<<It has System 7.1, 4 MB RAM (8 with RAM Doubler), 40 MB Hard Drive.
I installed FreePPP 2.6.2 and Netscape 2.0.2 and it FreePPP will
connect...>>

Not a year ago, I was messing online a lot with a Classic II. Mine was
running System 7.5.5 with Open Transport 1.1.2, Eudora 3.1.3 lite, and a
coupla different browsers. Netscape 2 was too light or too old often
achieving what Ted experienced. Netscape 4 was too heavy; it stumbled along
poorly. Netscape 3.0.4 Gold was just about right. Security, Java, and what
Eudora calls "Waste cycles drawing trendy 3D junk" kinda stuff doesn't do
credit to the current thinking of web designers with Netscape 3. I forget
what Netscape 3 does about Javascript. Seems to me it did that ok. Also, I
ran the early Internet Explorer 2.1 browser. I found I liked it much better
than any Netscape. It was quicker, lighter, brighter... But being earlier,
it didn't do quite as much as Netscape 3. It may not do Javascript; I
dunno. It was lots better than Netscape 2 though, that's for sure. I will
be configuring a Classic II to take over the basic eMail task of our
venerable SE now doing this duty up at the senior center. It will have both
the IE 2.1 and Netscape 3.0.4 Gold browsers on it just for the occassional
fun demo.

I haven't tried the iCab 68k browser on the Classic II yet but will. I do
suggest you consider going the Open Transport route. You can load a slim
System 7.5x or even a slim MacOS 7.6.1. You can add Open Transport to
System 7.1 if you like. I seem to remember that you need a specific version
of System 7.1 to do this, something like System 7.1.2(?) or maybe an SDK of
some kind. I haven't done this but listers here have. Just keep it slim.
Also, avoid using RAM Doubler. It bogged down my trials horribly. Put a
real full 10 MB of RAM in your Classic II. You will be cramped in the
Classic II's 10 MB of RAM. I was able to get a slim System 7.5.5/OT with
Eudora 3.1.3 and IE 2.1 up all at the same time and interacting when I
could find a website for 'em to interact with.

Keep us posted with your experience.

Oh... and I just read where our "Alexander Kaaling"
<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> just asked the same sort of question as did Ted.
Here we go again...

Bill
