I also have a Farallon Ethertalk (I think) that should provide a bridge
to Ethernet. I tried to hook my 800MHz iBook to this.
So basically I connected the phoneNet cable to the Ethertalk and
attached the RJ-45 Ethernet cable to the other side and switched on the
power. The Ethernet cable is of the crossed over variety because I don't
have a hub. I tried the iBook in both OSX and OS9 modes and couldn't see
any of the classics. Neither could any of the classics see the iBook.

It should work. I'm not familiar with the Farallon bridge because I use the MicroAsantePrint, but they ought to be fairly similar. Did you have the iBook booted up before you powered up the Ethertalk? Older Macs adn possibly older network products get fussy if they don't see an active ethernet connection at the other end of the wire when they power up. This can lead to things like the three boots for two Macs when trying to connect two older Macs by a cross over cable.

Anyway, that could be your problem. It should be sufficient (if this is the problem) to get everything powered and booted up, and then reset the Ethertalk (on the MicroAsantePrint I unplug the power adapter to reset).

Oh, I had one last thought. Is the iBook running Classic OS? If not (i.e., if you're running OSX) I think some special magic is required and documented on Gamba's site?
