I have a mini-network of classic macs with a Plus, an SE/30, aClassic II

I also have a Farallon Ethertalk (I think) that should provide a bridge
to Ethernet. I tried to hook my 800MHz iBook to this.
So basically I connected the phoneNet cable to the Ethertalk and
attached the RJ-45 Ethernet cable to the other side and switched on the
power. The Ethernet cable is of the crossed over variety because I don't
have a hub. I tried the iBook in both OSX and OS9 modes and couldn't see
any of the classics. Neither could any of the classics see the iBook.

Am I trying the impossible is there an easy fix? Is there any other way
to network?

I think you're trying the wrong approach with this. The Farallon Ethertalk bridge is designed for connecting a LocalTalk only device (eg a compact without an ethernet card or an old LaserWriter) to an ethernet network. There are several models; some support one LocalTalk device and others support several. Some models only support printers. What is the model number of the device? Are you sure that the bridge does not require Mac drivers?

Try hooking up the Farallon device directly to the Localtalk port on one of your old compacts and run the crossover cable to the iBook running OS9. There are additional problems networking older Macs to OSX so work with OS9 initially. Use a utility like SeverInfo to scan your network. try borrowing a hub and a couple of straight through cables; crossover cables are a known source of problems.
