I finished downloading the 19 parts of System 7.5.3 from Apple's FTP site onto my PC, put them on floppies using TransMac, copied the files from the floppies into the Mac, and then tried to run the installer by clicking the first file, which is an .smi.bin file, it has a pointer pointing to a diamond-shaped document. You get an agreement form, click Agree, and it starts to mount the disk image. After a few moments an error box pops up and says part 1 of 19 is invalid and it can't continue. I figured it might be a corrupted file, so I downloaded part 1 again, copied and loaded it into the Mac again. Same results, failure to run the disk image. After having spent in excess of 4 hours wasted downloading, formatting, writing, converting, copying, and then having the entire process fail miserably, I was so pissed at the thing I broke the mouse by slamming it on the table. I am about ready to throw the entire machine away, except that I have over $150 invested in the thing (upgraded motherboard, 128mb memory, new HD), it initially cost only $20 at the flea market. I never dreamed this thing could turn into such a nightmare! What am I supposed to do to get the first part of the 19 part system image to work (once I replace the mouse and calm down)? Right now I am hobbled by having to rely on a floppy as the startup disk, and I have no real system on the machine, just the barebones of a 7.6 boot floppy. I can't run any applications because I don't have any Control Panels to get into Memory to change to 32-bit addressing. I have 128mb RAM but the system takes it all and not enough is left to run anything. Somebody give me some hope for this thing, it is becoming a stupid waste of my time with everything that doesn't work.
