The particular model is a Performa 575. I replaced the internal CD drive (which died) which worked until it's mechanism decided to refuse to accept caddys any more. Hated those things, and it was very slow and unreliable at reading discs when it did work. No amount of adjustment or cleaning would bring it back. I purchased a replacement external SCSI CD last week. This worked fine until the I lost my System software on the HD, and had to resort to using a boot floppy. Until I can get a fresh System on the HD, the Mac will not recognize the CD drive on the SCSI bus, so it isn't usable to load software from CD until this problem is resolved. Something is wrong with the disk image of part 1 of 19 of System 7.5.3 I downloaded last night from Apple's FTP site.
