Dishwashing soap is alkaline, battery leakage used to be acidic until alkaline batteries came out. I can't speak about the capacitors, I don't believe I have heard of a resistor leaking anything other that electrons due to a crack in the resistor causing the resistor to fail or working only when there was enough charge to cross the break. I don't believe diodes, transistors or chips leak or melt a residue. That's the end of my high school electronics - come on guys, what are we working with? cigarette smoke tar film?
Only leaks I find are from the battery, Classic II is rather prone and I believe should be stored with the pram battery removed more so than other models, and capacitors which are flakey on most 68k models.
Most classic II's I see have suffered battery failure, this leaks under the chips and does its magic, same to a point with caps. Its very hard to remove by hand which maybe why a dishwasher is effective
Some engineer out there may be able to give us an insight as to the chemistry we need - such as the nature of the component residue that can affect the electrical perfomance of the board. Some chemist could then tell us what would do the job the best to clean it.
Well thats not me. ;) I left school and earnt a living, explains the poor comunnication skills I guess.
My first onlist post was about this subject, the only person to reply is no longer with us.
The point I'm trying to make is there are other options to using a dishwasher. Handy if one isn't handy, so to speak.
