WOOHOO! My SE/30 is 32 bit clean at last! Following advice from yesterday, I just went home, popped the IIsi ROM into place, rebooted and sat staring at the vertical lines. After about 45 seconds (can I really have been that impatient?) the screen turned to grey and Smiley Mac appeared! I was then prompted to reinstall System 7.1 because it didn't have the correct software "for this computer model" - previously I'd put a custom install of "System Software for SE/30", but doing an install with "System Software for Any Mac" seemed to keep it happy. After booting, I uninstalled Mode32 and now have full access to 80MB of RAM without any trickery.
Glad to hear it worked out for you at last, Paul. My SE/30 with the IIsi ROM also shows the vertical bars on startup but the delay is slightly shorter as I only have 32MB RAM fitted. The startup chime is also "wrong" on my SE/30 -- is this related to my Daystar 50MHz accelerator (Mark Benson reported the same observation, I believe?) or is it a ROM thing or are the logic board caps failing?
Have you tried the tips on Gamba's pages for using a RAM disk, Paul? I'd be interested to hear whether it makes the SE/30 more responsive, although mine is delightfully quick as it stands.
Note: no IIsi was harmed by me during the donation of the ROM module. I just happened to spot a badly described listing for SIMMs on eBay.
