I've seen several styles and was wondering which seem to be a better buy? Any reviews would be helpful.
Many of the third party ones are simply spring-return welding clamps. Pop down to your local metal basher and find a clamp with thin lips that will fit the gap. If you open the case regularly, the opener is not required as others have observed.
If the case has never been opened, there will be interference where the case buckets overlap. Squirt some silicone-based furniture polish onto a hard surface so that you have a little puddle of lubricant. Dip a cotton bud into the puddle and run the bud along the case joint whilst pressing on the rear case bucket to open the joint. An assistant is useful if your third arm is temporarily unavailable. Work with the Mac face down on a soft surface (cushion, thick towel etc). The silicone will work its way into the gap and reduce the interference where the case buckets meet. Don't spray polish directly onto the Mac. Leave for thirty minutes and it will usually shake apart without the need for an opener.
