Using a tool to separate the halves involves too much risk of dinging up the case. 
Others on this thread have already mentioned the "shake vigorously face down over a 
carpet" method or some such thing. I've never encountered a case that won't open with 
this
technique (and I've opened up a *lot* of classic macs), so there's no need to risk 
scratching up the case with a spreading tool.
