a 550 MB. How far can I go with upgrades before I either run out of speed,
or hit the brick wall of compatability? In other words, I'm pretty sure
upgrading a CC to OS-9 is impossible.

The 68030 CPU in the 550 MB can run up to MacOS 7.6.1. OS 8 requires a 68040 chip.
