My daughter had a large cello taken from her car. The serial number was immediately sent to every music store and pawn shop through out the county. It never showed up. There are junkies who don't have the brains left to know how difficult it can be to sell some items - they just need, but their pushers can be quite connected. So far that is the only logical explanation we can come up with as to why some one would steal a cello in a small town in a poor county and successfully get a way with it. Their supplier must have moved it through their connections a few counties or states away. You might keep an eye open for your SE on eBay.
