They probably didn't even know what they stole.  Maybe they thought
it was a computer or maybe a TV.

I once had a PowerBook Duo 210 stolen.  It was recovered by the
police in a pawn shop (with an absurd price on it).  It actually
came back to me in better condition than they took it in.  It was
originally held together by tape because the plastic was cracked
when I opened it, but they figured out how to get it to hold together
and look all pretty.  :)  Fortunately there were some identifying
features.
