Background: A month or so ago, they were cleaning out a storage closet at work. A pile of old equipment was wheeled past my desk on its way to the dump, and I noticed what looked like an original Mac down at the bottom.

The Goal: Get this Mac on the Internet over my home LAN using the oldest (reasonable) O/S possible.

Hello,

Could just be my story here ;-)
I'm stuck with pretty much the same problem.

I have an SE 1/20 with built-in 40 MB hard drive and 1,44 MB SuperDrive. System 7.5 installed. I thought first to try a rather "new" OS, then going back to System 6 later to speed things up.

Questions:

1) Is there an easy way to remove Appleshare File Server?

Boot from a floppy, remove the extensions/ control panels from the system folder?
Sorry, maybe I misunderstand something here - I could not even get it to install correctly.

2) What *is* the best way to share files between 6.0.8 and Panther? I would prefer to use Apple's file sharing protocol versus, say, FTP.

I literally spent HOURS last week and this weekend, trying to AppleShare to work, including:
- Installing newer AppleShare Extensions on the SE - 4 MB were not enough RAM for installer to work
- SharePoints once enabled me file sharing over TCP / IP with system 8.6 (i think) but proved totally useless here.
- emulating System 7.something with Basilisk under OS X. Unfortunately Basilisk has no ethernet support under OS X yet. The Windows port has - maybe it would work... But I have no Windows machine. I could try and install the Windows port of Basilisk with ethernet support on Virtual PC tough... ;-)
- and some other ideas like finding an AppleShare over AppleTalk implementation for the OS X classic environment.

To make it short - I have given up on AppleShare over Appletalk with. I will concentrate on getting internet connection sharing to work.

FTP via Ethernet has been reliable and relatively fast (around 20 kilobyte/s). I use an Asante EN/SC (SCSI-Ethernet adapter) and Fetch 2 as an FTP program. It should also work under System 6.

My advice would be: stick to FTP. AppleShare is not worth it (Just my opinion, of course)
But still - if anyone comes up with a solution - I'd be really interested!!!

regards,

Niels
