I recently bought a SE e-net card from someone on the list (thanks BK).
Still haven't had a chance to install it. I have a10/100 router w/ a few
machines hooked up for file-sharing and DSL-sharing.

Now I'm seeing all these posts about inability for one (some?) of these
cards to connect to a network w/o a (10BaseT?) switch... Am I going to be
disappointed here? I just want to use it for file-sharing-- Getting it
online will be cool but is not essential.

Can anyone elaborate on the the issue?

Some old 10BaseT cards (in particular Asante cards) don't work properly with 10/100 equipment. The simplest fix is to put a 10BaseT hub between the 10/100 gear and the NIC in question.

Additionally you may want to set up the TCP/IP on the SE with a manual address.
