Follow up:

Finally installed the Ethernet card in my SE (wow, they made upgrading tough
in the old days!), and everything works just fine-- my no-name 10/100 router
had no problem recognizing the card.

I first hooked it up w/ a crossover to make sure the card worked, then I
plugged it into the router... and yowza! I got me a 17 year old computer on
a modern network.
