I know that the single bit screen will present it's own issues but a reasonable xterm is all I am after.
Running an X server or VNC seems like overkill if you just want a terminal. A better option would be a terminal emulator talking straight to the serial port of your unix machine. Or if you've already got networking working on the mac, an ssh or telnet client.
