A System 7.1 Mac can access files on the OS X Mac but not the other way round (so far) as System 7.1 does not support AppleShare/IP file serving. To install an AppleShare/IP client on System 7.1, perform the following:
1. Patch System 7.1 applying Update 3.0 and Network Software Installer 1.5.1.
2. Add the usual enhancements: Thread Manager 2.1, CFM-68K Runtime Enabler 4.0, Macintosh Drag and Drop 1.1, MODE32 v7.5 (on IIx, IIcx, SE/30). See Gamba's pages on System 7.1 for more information.
3. Install Open Transport 1.1.1 and configure TCP/IP.
4. Install Open Transport 1.1.2 updater (you must have OT 1.1.1 on there first).
5. Boot from an alternative disk and replace the System 7.1 Finder with the version from System 7.5.3 or 7.5.5. Older Finders will bomb, cause file copy errors and report incorrect file permissions and disk sizes.
6. Install AppleShare extension 3.7.4 (available from Apple).
7. Reboot.
On the OS X Mac, use SharePoints to enable AppleTalk file sharing and define the folders that you wish to share. Set folder permissions using Get Info in the Mac OS X Finder.
Return to the System 7.1 Mac and use the Chooser to mount the OS X shares you require. You should be able to specify the server name by IP address, host name or by browsing AppleTalk zones.
