My guess, and I haven't tried any if this on a Mac, would be to look at the
handshake lines using a scope, and then try opening and closing the port in
code on the Mac, this is what I have done on RS-232 before, and I would
expect a similar operation on the Mac.

For the AC side, I used to have a circuit which used an opto-isolator from
the nasty triac AC side of things, just to keep your Mac safe ;-)
