Wow! More help than I can shake a stick at! Thanks for all your replies 
and suggestions. I'm probably not going to have much time to tinker in 
the next week or so, but I've certainly got a list of things to try. 
I'll probably start by cleaning the floppy drive, and see if that gets 
me any results; it's been sitting for quite a while, so that might 
certainly be an issue. I need to check the PRAM battery as well.

Again, thanks for all the suggestions. It's been *years* since I've 
messed with anything other than OS X, and I am rusty, rusty, rusty. :-(
