Norton Utilities 3.2 runs on System 7. The WipeInfo program can do a 'Government-level' wipe.

Scott,

this is an interesting question. I personally doubt that anybody would bother to even look for something of value on the HD of a school computer, but... I have been advised that I should worry about disposing of any computer I ever did a credit card transaction with.

I notice that under OS 10.3.9 the disk utility 10.4.4 has an option, when erasing a disk, of overwriting the disk 8 times with random data. I tried it and it takes forever. But it would be effective. I think selecting to "zero all data" was also an option on HD setup. While not as effective as the 8 way write, this should prevent any simple file recovery software.

What would be a way to completely erase these drives
