I've fixed the problem I had - at least I think so. After an extremely frustrating day with an unusable machine (dual-processor, Acer desktop).
System / Preferences / CompizConfig Settings Manager / OpenGL and then un-tick "Sync To VBlank". My machine came back to life. What a relief.
