After using the test kernel for a while, I can confirm that the issue still occurs with this kernel, it just takes more uptime for it to occur. I'm now trying the solution proposed in #55 (turning off 'Sync to VBlank') with the 2.6.38-8 (default 11.04) kernel, will report back.
