In unity, triggering the screen redraw by hitting the <super> key (the one with the windows symbol on it) works for me. If you don't just tap the key, but hold it down for > 0.5 seconds, the black "dash" overlay doesn't pop up. Easier than clicking around with the mouse. Still annoying.
