yes there are well-know tactics to break symetry, part of them implemented
in gnugo.
- play on contact of the center stone, and after some moves you will capture
something or force your opponent to break symetry (to avoid being captured)
- ladder collision (i dont know how to do this)

There are some 9d pro games with mirror go during rather long time.
