"Average" can mean one of three things: mean, median, mode. When unqualified, "average" usually refers to the "mean" - the sum of observations divided by the number of observations.
I would really really restrict the word "average" for the mean. Otherwise, I see no reason to restrict only to mean, median and mode, and exclude all other possible location estimators...
