If you want to get credit for resigning earlier, it could be based on the number of empty points on the board, or the move number or something. But if you were playing someone significantly stronger than yourself you could just resign immediately if you know the chances of winning were nil. Maybe there is a way for one of the players to issue a challenge based on his confidence in the win, and then it's up to the other player to accept or resign with some kind of penalty or bonus distributed based on what happens.
